A Mentor is…..
A wise and trusted friend
WHO IS TRUSTED PARTNERS? Trusted Partners is a
citywide mission of Immanuel UCC to address the causes of homelessness and
thereby prevent it. Trusted Partners utilizes volunteer mentors to support the
work of people currently served by 6 homeless prevention programs throughout the
city. Trusted Partners forms relationships of trust and support with volunteer
mentors and participants in homeless prevention programs. This relationship
assists in developing friendships and assisting individuals and families as they
strive to remain housed and become self-sufficient.
WHY MENTORING TO PREVENT HOMELESSNESS?
MENTORING…PUTS A FACE ON THE EXPERIENCE OF POVERTY. Facing homelessness or near
homelessness is isolating and frightening. Many times a person who is homeless
feels invisible and a trusted partner can be a valuable friend.
MENTORING…CAN IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR THE CITY OF INDIANAPOLIS. Ending
chronic homelessness is a priority at both the local and national level.
Mentoring will assist our community reach a higher percentage of success in
achieving stability.
MENTORING…CAN TOUCH THE FUTURE. Mentoring this generation to stability can
change the future for generations to come.
A MENTOR WILL:
Be a “wise and trusted friend”.
Attend a 4-hr training session and an initial interview.
Provide regular one to one contact for a minimum of 4-6 hours a month
Share such skills as budgeting, obtaining employment, and ways to not live in
crisis
Participate in mentor support and Recognition Ceremonies
WHO CAN BE A TRUSTED PARTNER?
People who care about others. A mentor believes that supportive friendships can
encourage hope. Using a strength–based approach, mentors will support and
celebrate the achievements of their trusted partners.
